Snapped two wheel studs on my BRZ while trying to rotate the tires. Looks like the guy at Costco forwent starting the nuts by hand and just rammed them on with an impact wrench. Wish I had caught it sooner since its been about six months since they were installed. Definitely won’t be returning to that location, and won’t be taking the car to any tire shops again, just the wheels from now on.

That sucks and I would say more than moderately frustrating. Costco is pretty darn good to work with on this sort of thing but I can understand not wanting to push the issue 6 months later. That said, since the lug nuts appeared to be fine until removal for a rotation, it makes sense you wouldn’t know for a while.

!@!# At least it’s easily and cheaply fixed yourself and there’s no long term damage.
FWIW, while waiting to get
a
flat repaired at Discount Tire,
I watched
one tech
seating the lugnuts with an airgun followed by a second guy doing the final tightening with a torque wrench.
I don’t know if all Discount Tire
s do that or just my local one but I was impressed.

There are some here who will argue this point with me with vigor and at length, but here goes: I use copper paste / never seize on my wheel studs and have been for 35 years. Gotta be careful not to overtorque. I rotate my tires myself every 5,000 miles diligently and no, they do not loosen any because never seize.

Yeah I usually spend an extra hour to put my car up on stands and take all four wheels off, toss em in the truck and drop off the loose wheels at the tire shop for mounting and balancing. Less work for them, less worry for me.

I tried calling their tire department to just talk to them about what happened, but pretty sure this specific one is closed on Sundays . Planning on calling in the morning just to let them know, but I’m not looking to get anything from it just hoping they’re more careful about their procedures in the future since its an easily avoidable mistake . Replacement studs aren’t expensive and I have extra lug nuts so I’m not looking for any sort of compensation or anything.

This one’s my pitch bitch with lazy staff at the tire stores . never let them use an impact wrench for the final...
Low torque with the power tools— the final wheel lug torque-to-spec with an actual torque wrench.
At least they look easy to fix. My son and I wasted a complete weekend on this particular ass-pain issue on an old W126 Benz last year. never again.

28365FE001 and 28171AJ000 are what you need. Lisle 22800 makes the install a breeze.
No, I didn’t just help a friend of mine with this on his 2012 Forester when doing rear brakes after he had new tires installed at a Jack Williams Tire Center. No, I don’t keep spares of both part numbers around due to past experiences. No, definitely not. I don’t know why you’re asking...

There is a “certain crowd” who love to pile on this issue-- but once you’ve dealt with seized lug nuts? Your perspective changes a lot.

Yeah, that’s my plan from this point on. Tires and alignment are the only things I ever take my car in for, but now it’s only going to be for an alignment.

Oddly, Discount Tire (America’s Tire here in Cali) actually does have a corporate standard for this stuff... final torque always set by hand and final tire pressure per the manufacturer’s specs.

Lol, thanks for the part numbers. I haven’t had to do wheel studs in a long time, but they’re fairly easy to go about fixing so I think I should be able to get it done in under 30 minutes. I’ll probably pick up some spares for the future but I’m hoping not to have this issue again in the future since only the wheels will be going in next time.

You definitely need to mention this to at least keep them on their toes. Even though I trust Discount Tire when I get my tires rotated & balanced, I still go home and check the torque on all my wheels.
If they get it wrong, it could warp my rotors. I turn back each lug nut about 1/8th turn, then re-torque to specified spec. Almost always, they were right on. But just in case.

It took us ~5 minutes to replace the stud, but that was just a small detour in a brake job. I managed to break a stud on my 2009 Forester once swapping back from snow tires one year - that wasn’t any shop’s fault, but I do put at least some blame on the supplied aftermarket lug nuts. My friend’s lug stud was only the second one we’ve broken in ~10 years. I keep spares of parts like that these days, mainly for the personal satisfaction of not needing to stop work to get parts.

Les Schwab once snapped off one of my studs. I was pretty unhappy, but so it goes.

Costco makes a big thing about doing the final torque with a torque wrench and often has the torque wrench tester behind the counter (I always want to just stop by to check my decent quality torque wrenches). That being said who knows if the tech even looks up the correct value, or may be they ugga dugga them on and throw torque wrench on for show. I think they just set the wrench to 100ft-lb and that is the torque all cars get. As soon as I get home I always loosen the nuts an re-torque to spec, drive for a bit and check again. I also switched to a slightly better anti-seize (when it says you can’t touch it you know it means business) but regular paste should work.
I know the tire manager of a Costco nearby and even then I checked with my wrench when I got home to see at what torque they would tighten more and it seems that instead of 80ft-lbs they were all at 100. I also watched the tech do it an they didn’t do a star patter on my 5 lugs.
If you track your car or are concerned about the other studs it might be worth the hassle to change them all. While not torque to yield I wonder if the extra torque deformed the or weakened the metal.

Not to add fuel to the fire, might just be the camera angle, but that right wheel stud looks leaning to the right?

Just went out to double check, they are all in straight. Still, thanks for the heads up, could have led to more issues if it were.

Had the same thing happen years back when I had my Im preza, but they had another laying around and replaced it at no charge. I used to go to them, but Costco was cheaper on the tires the last couple of times.

I’ve been using Discount Tire since my early 20s. No complaints. I don't mind paying more if I know the job is done right.

I hope they made it right! I am a huuuuge Les Schwab fan. Whatever the job they always do it on time (or faster ) and for the price quoted. And they stand behind their work 100%. They will fix anything for free no matter how many miles down the road. There just aren’t many businesses like that these days.

Over the years, I’ve been relatively lucky and only had to replace wheel studs once on one car.
It’s really disappointing when so-called “experts” fuck up something so basic.

I may be remembering wrong but don’t the BRZ/FRS/86s have week studs or something. I vaguely remember something about them.
